Section 504Accommodations & Plans

Ensuring students with disabilities have equal access to learning and school activities.

What Is Section 504?

Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 is a federal civil rights law that protects students with a physical or mental impairment that substantially limits a major life activity. A 504 Plan provides accommodations so these students can fully participate in school alongside their peers.

504 Plan

Provides accommodations — changes to how a student learns — so they can access the general curriculum. It does not change what is taught.

IEP

Provides specialized instruction under special education law. If your child may need an IEP, visit our Special Education page.

Common Accommodations

Preferential seating
Extended time on tests
Frequent breaks
Assistive technology
Modified assignments or materials
Health or medication support

Requesting a 504 Plan

If you believe your child may qualify, contact the school to begin the process. The 504 team will review information, determine eligibility, and develop a plan with you. Plans are reviewed regularly to make sure they continue to meet your child's needs.
