OurAttendance Policy
Consistent attendance is one of the most important factors in a child's ability to learn, grow, and thrive.
Regular attendance builds the essential skills and relationships that help students succeed. When children are in school every day, they keep pace with instruction, stay connected to their classroom community, and develop habits that carry them through their education. At P.S. 38, we partner with families to make sure every Dolphin is here, on time, and ready to learn.
The School Day
Reporting an Absence
If your child will be absent or late, please notify the Main Office as early as possible. When your child returns, send in a written note (or doctor's note) explaining the absence.
Call (718) 351-1225Excused vs. Unexcused
Excused absences include illness, medical appointments, religious observance, or a family emergency. Absences without a valid reason are recorded as unexcused. Either way, a written explanation helps us keep accurate records and support your child.
Arriving On Time
Instruction begins promptly at 7:45 AM. Students who arrive after 7:55 AM are marked late and should report to the Main Office. Even a few late minutes each day add up to lost learning time.
Chronic Absenteeism
A student is considered chronically absent after missing 10% or more of school days — about 18 days a year. We monitor attendance closely and reach out to families early so we can work together to remove any barriers to getting to school.
